Hatch is hidden away just behind Homerton station. Once you’re there you can’t miss it. The whole front wall is completely made up of a collection of windows in all shapes and sizes. Inside, Hatch looks like a lost boy den filled with all sorts of odds ‘n’ ends and bits ‘n’ bobs, like when you find something worth keeping but you’re not sure what to do with it, clearly the answer is open a coffee shop! The mishmash objects kind of reminded us of the inside of a nan’s kitchen… (in a good way), with 60’s kitchen cabinets, old sofas, retro radios that probably don’t work and big granddad chairs. Upstairs they even had a salon set up (which we assume is just for decoration). Get your self a coffee, a massive slice of cake, a seat in the granddad chair and you could sit there for hours just playing eye spy!
The jumble sale continues into the toilets with interesting, if slightly confusing, bright yellow doors that open like a wardrobe, which make for a very grand and dramatic entrance (or exit). It might sound strange to say the best part of the toilet was the doors but hey, it’s the little things in life right? They also have a different and slightly random antique in each cubical which makes you feel like each toilet has uniqueness and personality (which as far as we are concerned is a very important quality for a toilet).
So far in our adventures we are yet to come across a sink quite as impressive as this. You could probably squeeze a reasonable sized elephant into that sink and still be able to wash your hands. It also reminded us of the sinks you used to see at high school in the dreaded art classes. They were always covered in dark brown paint stains and surrounded by ancient brushes that have never been washed.
Hatch is definitely worth the visit if you’re in the area (or even if you’re not), it’s so relaxed they probably have their own Spotify playlist called “Chill AF” and only employ people who have “Hakuna Matata” tattooed to their wrist.
Go on down to Hatch and maybe one day you'll be nearly half as chilled as these guys
